Hair Restoration Using the FUT and FUE Techniques
Hair restoration by Dr. Kenneth A. Buchwach in Leawood, KS, incorporates the latest medical technologies and the most advanced techniques to create results that look great and last a lifetime. Additionally, some of his most gratifying cases is repairing old hair transplants done with "plugs" years ago.
Hair restoration is appropriate for both men and women who have suffered hair loss but there are some gender differences. For men, the vast majority suffer from male pattern baldness, which is genetic, i.e., blame the parents. Men as young as 18 may be candidates for hair transplantation.
Women have a multitude of possible reasons for hair loss. Dr. Buchwach generally operates on those with diagnosed female pattern hair loss. He also can help those who have had thinning hair after chemotherapy. Most of his female patients have already been diagnosed by their personal physician or dermatologist and then referred to him for hair transplantation.
Thanks to Dr. Buchwach’s expertise in follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE), you can achieve results that look great and last a lifetime.
A consultation with Dr. Buchwach is the first step in hair restoration. If you live in the Kansas City area, he will meet with you personally. However, half his patients live outside the Kansas City area and he can arrange a phone consultation which usually includes photos sent over the internet. The consultation will review the surgical and medical options, range of costs , and realistic expectations. Of course, all consultations are done personally by Dr. Buchwach.
The two technique Dr. Buchwach offers are FUT and FUE. Both are donor harvesting procedures. With FUT, a small strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head and under magnification, the grafts are then created, dissecting them from the strip. This technique is appropriate for almost all women and for men who wear their hair longer. Dr. Buchwach realizes some men prefer FUE even if they have longer hair and he will, of course, accommodate them.
FUE results in no incision. The grafts are removed with a motorized punch leaving tiny openings (1 mm or less) that heal quickly. In Dr. Buchwach's practice, each of these FUE grafts is also examined under the microscope so that only excellent FUE grafts are utilized. The FUE technique is preferred for patients who wear their hair short or at least want the option to wear it short.
What Patients Can Expect
Dr. Buchwach can explain what you can expect from treatment according to your age, degree of hair loss and personal goals. A personalized plan will be developed specifically to take into account these factors that ensure that even if you have a procedure at a young age, the results will be long lasting and natural the rest of your life.
In general, it takes about four months after a hair transplant for the hair to begin to grow and after that it should grow about one-half inch per month. Occasionally some patients may seek a second procedure to achieve greater density or greater coverage and this can be done any time after nine months.
One of the greatest benefits of FUT and FUE is permanent results. After your transplant is complete, your hair will continue to grow indefinitely. In addition to lasting results, patients can also experience improved self-esteem and confidence.
