What is FUE?

FUE is a hair transplant technique that involves using tiny punches and suction to harvest individual grafts. The FUE procedure works well for all men. It is especially recommended for patients who prefer short hairstyles that would not conceal the linear scar associated with follicular unit transplantation. FUE is appropriate for any degree of hair loss.

Compared to widely advertised hair systems (toupees), FUE and FUT are far more economical because the results are permanent and there is no ongoing expense.

FUE versus FUT

Dr. Buchwach performs both FUE and FUT procedures in order to accommodate a range of needs. While FUE involves removing only tiny punched out grafts, FUT involves removing a small strip of skin tissue containing hair follicles. FUT is usually recommended for female patients and men who wear their hair more than an inch in length. FUE is more costly because it requires much more harvesting time. However, the grafts obtained are equally good with FUE versus FUT. It is important to understand that compared to widely advertised hair systems (toupees), FUT and FUE are far more economical choices because the results are permanent and there is no ongoing expense. Both techniques achieve excellent results. Dr. Buchwach will review which one is better suited for you. 

How SmartGraft Works

SmartGraft is minimally invasive FUE device that causes little discomfort and no scarring. Unlike other FUE procedures, the SmartGraft device suctions the grafts into the mainframe of the system where the grafts are kept constantly moist and constantly cool. This prevents the grafts from drying out. This increases the viability of the grafts. It is simply the best suction-assist system in the world. 

The entire procedure takes most of the day. There are multiple breaks for the patient as well as snacks and beverages. Whether FUT or FUE is being done most patients watch TV or movies. They are comfortable enough that at least half fall asleep. It is done under local anesthesia so patients can drive themselves to and from the office. You can return to work a day or two after the procedure. Because of the less invasive nature of Smart Graft technology, there are fewer restrictions on your activity level as well as a shorter recovery period. You can expect a full recovery in about a week. It takes about four to six months for hair growth to begin and nine months or more before you see the full results.
